Find the cost of one

A unit rate compares an amount with one unit. It helps you compare prices even when packages contain different quantities.

Work through an example

Five identical storage boxes cost $17.50 in total. What is the cost per box?

  1. Identify what you need. Dollars for one box.
  2. Divide the total cost by the number of boxes.$17.50 ÷ 5 = $3.50 per box
  3. Check your result.5 × $3.50 = $17.50

Why the order matters

Dollars divided by boxes gives dollars per box. Reversing the order answers a different question. Write the units before calculating.
